LOWBED TRAILER FOR ZIMBABWE
80 Ton 5 Axle Lowbed Trailer for Zimbabwe
This 80-ton five-axle lowbed was configured for heavy-equipment transport in Zimbabwe. It is 3,000 mm wide, uses air suspension and has a self-steering axle layout. The first two axles can be lifted, and the paired spring-assisted ramps are used for drive-on loading.

MACHINERY LOADING
Rear Ramps and a Low, Wide Deck
Machinery enters from the rear and moves straight onto the main deck. The 3,000 mm overall width gives more room for wide tracks, while the lowered platform helps keep the loaded height down.
01
Drive-On Loading
Two steel ramps form the rear approach to the deck. Large coil springs take part of the ramp weight during lifting, so the ramps can be handled without a separate hydraulic power unit.
02
Low Main Deck
The load sits below the fixed gooseneck rather than on a level flatbed. This leaves more height available for excavators, loaders and other tall equipment.
03
Check the Machine Fit
Track width and ground clearance determine how the machine meets the ramps. Its length, operating weight and centre of gravity determine where it should sit on the deck.
RUNNING GEAR
Five-Axle Steering and Air Suspension
Five self-steering axles sit beneath the rear of the main deck. The first two are liftable, and the axle group uses air suspension. This arrangement reduces tyre scrub in tight turns and allows two axles to be raised when their load capacity is not needed.

Five Self-Steering Axles
The axles are spaced at 1,310 mm centres. Steering through the axle group helps the wheels follow the trailer through a turn instead of dragging sideways across the road surface.

First Two Axles Lift
Axles one and two can be raised when their load capacity is not required. They stay down when the cargo weight and axle-load distribution call for all five axles.

Air Suspension
Air springs, reservoirs and control lines are fitted beneath the deck. The system supports ride-height control across the closely spaced axle group.

1,050 mm Main Deck
The specified 245/70R17.5 tyres keep the main deck at 1,050 mm in this configuration, leaving more height available for the machinery carried above it.
The 80-ton rating is only part of the setup. Tractor fifth-wheel load, permitted axle loads and the machine's centre of gravity determine how the load should be placed across the trailer.

Questions About the 80 Ton Five-Axle Lowbed
These answers cover the configuration shown on this page, including load fit, ramp access, axle operation and the extendable deck.
What does the 80-ton rating mean?
It is the rated payload for this trailer configuration. The weight permitted on a public road can be lower because tractor load, individual axle limits, tyre ratings, route restrictions and permits also apply.
Are the rear ramps hydraulic?
No. This trailer has two spring-assisted steel ramps. The coil springs carry part of the ramp weight while the ramps are raised or lowered, so a separate hydraulic power unit is not used for them.
How do I know whether my machine will fit the ramps?
Each ramp is 950 mm wide. Check the machine's track or tyre width, spacing, ground clearance and breakover point against the ramp positions and the 1,050 mm deck height before loading.
Why does a five-axle lowbed use steering and lift axles?
The self-steering layout helps the wheels follow the trailer through a turn with less sideways scrub. Axles one and two can be lifted when their capacity is not needed, provided the remaining axle loads and local rules allow it.
Can the trailer length be extended?
Yes. The layout shows 13,500 mm overall length in the closed position and 16,500 mm when extended. The extended position is shown for carrying a 40 ft container.
Can it carry both 20 ft and 40 ft containers?
The specified deck includes locking positions for both sizes. Container type, loaded weight and the intended lock position still need to be checked so the kingpin and axle loads remain within the selected operating limits.
What information is needed before ordering?
Provide the machine's operating weight and transport dimensions, track or tyre spacing, ground clearance and centre of gravity if available. Also include the tractor model, fifth-wheel height, loading site conditions and the routes the trailer will use.
